The basic recipe for a chocolate cake are as follows: one ounce of unsweetened chocolate squares, one half cup of butter, one cup of water, two cups of flour, two cups of sugar, a pinch of salt, one half cup of buttermilk, one and a quarter teaspoon of baking soda, two beaten eggs, and one teaspoon of vanilla. It is not too difficult.
To bake, preheat the oven to three-hundred fifty degrees. In a large saucepan melt four squares of chocolate and one half cup of butter in the hot water and bring to a boil. Remove it from the heat and add flour, sugar, and salt; and mix well with an eggbeater mixer, or kitchen whisk.
Stir in the butter milk, baking soda, and eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth. Pour it into a thirteen by nine inch pan and back at three-hundred fifty degrees for about twenty-five to thirty minutes, until the top springs back when touched with a fingertip.
