Creating Chocolate Cake from Scratch

Something about a homemade chocolate cake screams ‘love in every bite.’ How much would your sweetheart appreciate it if you baked him or her a delicious chocolate cake for his or her birthday.

How much more would a child appreciate a homemade cake as opposed to a pre-packaged cake or a store bought cake? Luckily, with all the fancy bosch mixers and kitchen appliances most people own, baking a homemade cake generally does not take much longer than baking a pre-packaged cake.

There are a couple things to keep in mind when baking a delicious homemade cake. Remember to pay close attention to the recipe. It is important to use exact measurements, especially when baking.

When the recipe says to alternate adding in flour and milk, make sure to do it. This will give your cake added lightness and moistness to your cake. Failing to do this will result in a heavy ‘brick cake.’

Remember as well to separate your eggs before adding them into the batter and sift flour before assembling your batter. Sifting your flower introduces oxygen and lightness into the batter early on.

Something else you can do in order to preserve moistness and richness is substituting half the shortening with margarine, butter, or applesauce. However, in doing this some of the weight and bad fats will be removed as well.

The basic recipe for a chocolate cake are as follows: one ounce of unsweetened chocolate squares, one half cup of butter, one cup of water, two cups of flour, two cups of sugar, a pinch of salt, one half cup of buttermilk, one and a quarter teaspoon of baking soda, two beaten eggs, and one teaspoon of vanilla. It is not too difficult.

To bake, preheat the oven to three-hundred fifty degrees. In a large saucepan melt four squares of chocolate and one half cup of butter in the hot water and bring to a boil. Remove it from the heat and add flour, sugar, and salt; and mix well with an eggbeater mixer, or kitchen whisk.

Stir in the butter milk, baking soda, and eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth. Pour it into a thirteen by nine inch pan and back at three-hundred fifty degrees for about twenty-five to thirty minutes, until the top springs back when touched with a fingertip.

There you have it, homemade chocolate cake. It is a delicious and thoughtful treat for that special person in your life and it is a piece of cake to make.
